I found the problem.

= First thing to do is go to Comm Manager and turn on Data Connection 
(this was the step I'd missed.

= Then go to Internet Sharing and connect to, in my case, AT&T.

= My Ubuntu 9.04 sees the connection as a wired network, and I'm off and 
running. Beats heck out of paying the hotel or airport $10 a day for 
wireless service.u provided might necessary for another phone/Linux 
combination, but in my case, out of the box, it works.
