The PRE has a *proximity sensor* in the upper left corner that disables screen buttons when you are on a call & blanks the screen. When you take the phone away from your face, it again comes to life so you can Hang Up. I know because mine quit working and I was always hanging up calls when I blinked. Sprint/Palm replaced the phone.
