Thanks Jeff & Don. With your suggestions, and a little more help from
Chapura Pocket Mirror tech support, I was able to get my old Palm OS
categories to appear in the Outlook master categories list. It isn't
intuitively obvious, and the Outlook Help was of no help in this regard, but
all you have to do is rename the blank default color categories so they have
the same exact name as your actual categories. Then they become part of the
master list and also have a color associated with them.

Hi George,

I really haven't done much with categories in OL2007. As noted in JB's
post, there was in OL2003 the concept of the Master Category list. Those
would be assignable categories, but you could type in other categories, not
on that list. I think that's gone in OL2007, and you have to explicitly
create categories to use them. Perhaps if there is a category that came in
from the outside, you have to add it in to use it further.

Cheers,
Don

Between Outlook 2003 and 2007 Microsoft changed how categories were stored
in Outlook. Having the Palm software make the categories I am sure suffers
the same condition. If I remember correctly, if you bring up all the
categories, it will tell you which ones are not in the "master list". From
there it's fairly easy to add them in to the master list. Then you'll be
able to choose them like any other category. I had to do this when I
upgraded, I use close to 200 categories.

Subject: [Treo] Notes/Memos in Pre & Outlook 2007

My question concerns the Notes/Memos that were imported from my old Palm OS
device (Treo 700p) which synced with Palm Desktop. The Notes were grouped
into 10 categories.

As I've mentioned previously on this list, when I got the new Palm Pre Plus,
I decided to use Outlook 2007 as my desktop PIM, so I migrated all the data
from Palm Desktop to Outlook. Then I began to sync the Pre with Outlook
using Pocket Mirror which successfully loaded all my PIM data onto the Pre.
Happily, my Notes categories were preserved on both the Pre and Outlook.

When I open Notes in Outlook 2007, I can see my notes grouped by the various
categories, but when I create a NEW note in Outlook, I am not able to assign
any of the pre-existing category names. The only categories available in
Outlook seem to be NEW COLOR categories (red, yellow, etc). The old
categories that exist on the Pre are not available in the category list for
assigning to new records in Outlook.

Am I missing something? Shouldn't the old category names be available for
assigning to new notes that I create in Outlook, just as I can on the Pre?
And if can't assign an old category to a new note, is there at least some
way to MOVE newly created Outlook notes into one of the old categories?

George
