If that's all that's going on with the phone camera, then I'm in error.
It does make sense, since the phone is not really doing anything optical
with the lens.
I'm a journalist who shoots lots of pics, and a fairly serious
hobbyist who does lots of PS processing. Which doesn't really mean I
fully understand what I'm doing, so thanks for the explanation.
There is, then, left one reason for wanting some kind of cropping
on the Pre, whether it's "zoom" or simply cropping: I often shoot
on-the-spot pics with my phone that either make the paper or online.
Photoshop often is not an option.
