Me too, starting this evening. (VZW Pre Plus) In my experience when it does this it's typically because the email hasn't finished downloading. Maybe there's an attachment or embedded images that are still being downloaded. Usually, if I tap that email to open it a few minutes later, the message opens up straight away.
As for the current sluggishness I'm seeing this evening, it's not just in the email app, but the entire system in general. I just rebooted and that fixed it.
