When I did the test described below, I used an iPod headset.  

I later tried a real microphone (a mono computer videoconferencing mic)
while recording video on the Pre.  Still no sound.  

But when I plug in the Palm-supplied Pre telephone headset -- which has a
that has a built-in mic -- the camcorder app DOES record sound, although it
sounds a lot more muted than when recorded using the Pre's normal mic. 

So, perhaps this means that if we use a proper stereo microphone plugged
into the headphone jack, we can record better-sounding audio.  I'd test
this, but I don't have a good stereo mic.
