Jim, I haven't tried it, but I did use Brightkite a bit a couple of years
ago.  It's billed as a location-based social network and integrates with
others.  I'ts competitors are Foursquare and Gowalla amongst others.  There
was a bit of a brewhaha when the CEO at some point last year made some
comments to some journalists which later got included in an article which
seemed misogynistic to many.  I haven't heard much since then, so I don't
know if that ever got resolved.  What annoyed me was that there app costs
money whereas the other providers don't.  Gowalla has a nice-looking app,
but I've been to a lot of places that didn't exist in there database and
there's no way to add a new one - at least not via the mobile app.
 Foursquare is about to come out with a new version of Pre app which will
have UI improvements as well as new features, some of which aren't on any
other mobile client.  The other thing is that I see tweets all the time from
people via Foursquare updates, but almost never on Gowalla and literally
never with Brightkite...
