So they are going to stop innovating, upgrading, adding features, etc.? Seems 
like a bad idea if they want to keep the OS current and not stale.

They've addressed that. Plan is for "Froyo" (2.2?) to be last major 
update from Google for a long time to let existing and new hardware 
catch up. Doesn't mean OEMs won't still innovate on top, but 
underlying core OS will be fairly stable going forward. At least 
that's the plan.
