Well... I'd say it is not quite the same. Compaq was a PC/laptop company, in a similar business as HP.
Palm is in a different business than HP, one in which HP is recognizing they need to be part of...the "wave of the future". HP is probably realizing that iPad/tablet devices...utilizing apps, the "cloud" etc is the way users will live life. They see the potential of WebOS, along with Palm's many patents, and see a Palm purchase as a quicker and easier way to get in the game (rather than look to MSFT or develop their own). They are also figuring that they shouldn't count on MSFT for the future... Apple and Google will be the major players going forward. Palm is closer in theory and concept (of the future) than MSFT is right now, IMHO.
