This is well known on the Sprint Pre...it has half the RAM of the Pre Plus, and often fails to recapture enough when apps are closed to allow launching a RAM-hungry app like a 3D game.
You might want to grab JSTop (homebrew) to monitor your memory situation. You may also want to look at any 3rd party apps you have running that persistently download or generate data, as they may be capturing some resources the system needs for the game.
