John, I think you're being a bit harsh. It has nothing to do with someone thinking they are so important that an entire message list needs to know that they are on vacation, but rather that this person does not have the tech savvy to even KNOW that his lists will get such messages, or if he does know, that he's simply neglected to catch every single list he's on. I don't like getting these either, but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. It's too easy online to assume the worst, and also say things to people we would never say in person. Maybe it's the optimist in me, but I think most people's intentions are good and reasonable and when things like this happen it's mostly due to either a lack of knowledge or simply an honest forgetting of something. Sure it's annoying, but is it really worth raking the guy over the coals for such an "infraction"? I don't think so personally. In understand that the aggregation of such people doing this may make it all the worse for you. Since such instances probably will never just go away, I'm wondering if one tactic to take might just be to filter your mail for "I'll be away" or I'll be out of the office" and have those go directly to your trash? That way you won't have to deal with these for the most part?
