My significant other got a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate this weekend on AT&T. Of course, I've had to spend some time playing with it and setting it up. I must say, I'm very impressed with the phone. It has an amazing display, great feel, and is very responsive. Plus, the phone quality is very good. Would I swap my Pre+ for it? I'm not sure.
We both like to sync with Outlook , so I set the phone up to use the same sync functions as I have. Using gSync does a great job for getting contacts and the calendar over to google/gmail. It also sets up a sync to move Notes into Google Docs and tasks into gmail. If you're wanting to replace a 700p, I would say it does a good job, in some aspects. The memo function really is made to live on the phone. I was able to find an app for Android that syncs with Google docs, though I haven't figured out why it won't keep the documents in the folder that I created for the Outlook notes to sync into on google's servers. If you want the name of it, email me. I'll have to look later. If anyone on this list using Android has better options, let me know. I was also able to setup gTasks on Android to sync with tasks in gmail. So far, it seems pretty good. The camera on the phone has a really nice quality. It doesn't have a flash like the Pre, but it does seem to have good light sensitivity to get a photo in darker settings. The best thing is its ability to zoom. I REALLY miss even the limited zoom on the Treo/Centros. The Galaxy S has variable zoom that is operated using the volume buttons. So far, the browser seems very functional. It's a webkit browser, so it should render much like the Pre. It's certainly better than the Treo. Now, the big complaints with the Galaxy S so far. We haven't figured out why-I've gone through all the sound settings-but it does not make a peep when an SMS or MMS comes in. This isn't too helpful when someone is trying to reach you. Also, it doesn't make a peep for email. In fact, the mail isn't even downloading messages every 15 minutes like the account settings state. Nothing happens until the email is opened. When the account is selected it will go through a refresh to get the messages from the server. Anyway, those are my observations about it. Hopefully they help. Michael Michael J.
