The Beatitudes

1 - Poor in Spirit.
Matthew 5:3: Blessed are the poor in spirit. For theirs is the Kingdom
of heaven

One characteristic of a poor man is he is known by seeking. Have you ever
noticed a poor beggar by the rubbish heap, he is scavenging for something
to eat. With this in mind Jesus taught the multitude that blessed is the
poor in spirit. He was specific on the residence of the poverty it is the
spirit.

Those who are poor in the spirit will seek the Kingdom of God, and as they
do so everything that pertains to the Kingdom of heaven becomes theirs. I
believe that was what was heard of King David such that the Lord testifies
that in David I have found the man after my own heart. At one point in
time David said when my heart is broken take me to a Rock that is higher
than me. Again we hear him says as the buck desires the brook so does my
heart desires you Lord.

When one is poor in spirit he is dependent upon the Lord, and desires to
have more of the Lord than more of His things. So why then does the Lord
say "for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven?" Go with me to the book of
Isaiah 66:1 ‘Thus says the Lord…’. The prophet is no longer talking out of
revelation but he is now the mouth piece of God. So what says the Lord?

Heaven is my throne and earth is my footstool where is the house you will
build for me?

A throne is a majestic seat where Kings sit. The reason why the Lord asks
where is the house that you will build for me is that He wanted to show
us His greatness, that you can never build a house enough to contain God.
So what shall we do now Lord we have tried to impress you by the works of
our hands? Then from the throne the Lord says ‘But on this one will I
look!!! On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit and who trembles at My
Word (verse 2 b)

Powerful, the Lord is willing to put His throne into the Heart of a man of
Poor Spirit, and dwell there. Jesus said to His disciples that my father
and I will come and dwell in you and who are the disciples. In Isaiah 66
are those who tremble before the Word of the Lord and John puts it this
way in John 8:31…if you abide in my Word you are my True disciples
indeed.

Those who are poor in spirit are the ones who shall hear the knock of the
Lord. Rev 3:20 behold I stand knocking if any man hears and open, I will
enter and eat with him and Him with Me. So David says ‘What is man that
you are mindful of….Psalm 8:1.
