It's basically a public key, so I guess RSA/DSA encryption, something like that. ESP8266 has SSL support in the Arduino MQTT library: https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_MQTT_Library/blob/master/examples/adafruitio_secure_esp8266/adafruitio_secure_esp8266.ino ESP8266 is what my goal light is based on.
