It is now 11 weeks away from SoutheastCon 2020 and I need to start lining up volunteers to help me run the hardware contest. The competition will be held in Raleigh, next March 14th (Saturday).
So what is SoutheastCon? It is IEEE's largest convention in the south east US and includes several competitions, a paper/poster presentation, and training. The biggest competition is always the hardware competition where I anticipate about 60-70 college age teams competing. I hosted the same event in 2017 and had about 60 teams and had several individuals from the IEEE R&A, TAR, and TriEmbed groups assist, so reaching out to the same group again this year as well. (PS: You can find those rules as well as videos online - it was Star Wars themed that year). I have included the rules for the competition at the end of this message, but here is a break down of what people I need. Since the competition falls on Pi Day, the competition is appropriately Pi themed - check out the rules for details. So what do I need? I need 2x people per arena, for 4x arenas, just to do the count down, start the competition, monitor the robots and record the score (I will provide details on how to do that). I also need an MC - someone to announce the competitions, next teams, etc I need a score keeper (collect and add up the sheets from the judges), and a runner (someone to pick up the sheets from the judges to the score keeper. And I need about 4x to help with general flow control of the robots to and from the contest areas. So about 15x people total. No technical skill required - all you need is the desire to help with running the contest. It is amazingly fun if you like watching students excited about academics and something they built to compete. If you have a particular task that sounds fun to you, let me know and I will put that with your name and try to accommodate. If not, I will assign tasks during the competition. The competition is Saturday, March 14th from 8am - 4pm, but I would like meet up with the judges Friday afternoon about 4pm to go over the competition, show everyone their tasks, and for them to get acquainted with the teams and the robots. Anyone interested? Btw, after submitting your name, I can add you to the Discord channel where the teams are talking about the competition, their robots, etc that way you can follow along if interested.
