At very high frequencies RF begins to mimic light and mostly travel in straight lines. But only mostly. The paths do bend somewhat at 900Mhz and the Wikipedia page below has excellent examples that show how getting antennas up high is helpful. So far with meshcore from my tree sanctuary I cannot ping (send a packet and receive an "echo" back) from any repeater except Tarheel Backhaul and even with that only about every fifth packet I send gets received and turned into an echo. This is despite having repeaters 1/4 the distance of Tarheel. So altitude is my only hope. An amateur buddy is coming over the weekend and we'll see what we can accomplish.
