When I switched over to Earthlink they let me keep my
Surfboard(which I was renting from TimeWarner).  My
Surfboard is an external unit with an
ethernet(10baseT/RJ-45) socket and coax connector on
it.  Plug your "cable" into the coax and your
straight-thru ethernet cable to the 10baseT socket and
your in business.
