Guess I'm gonna start a flame war, but here goes: I used to agree with you Jason on lilo vs. grub, but now I have to sing the praises of grub. I have had less problems getting grub installed than lilo. Granted I've installed it and rebuilt my multiple PC's about 10 time each in the past 2 years (good experience), so I may have the jump on you there.
I found this howto very helpful: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Linux+Win9x+Grub-HOWTO/proc.html#AEN54 I do agree you need to reinstall a bootloader. One thing you can do is boot from a Win98SE boot disk, run fdisk /mbr and boot off the linux disk and reinstall RH 8. Hope it helps. -----Original Message----- From: Jason Tower [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, October 13, 2002 1:08 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [TriLUG] help! Removal of RH Grub you don't really need to "get rid" of grub, you just need to overwrite the MBR (master boot record) with a fresh bootloader. frankly, i find LILO easier to understand and work with than GRUB, you might try using that next time. when you reinstall the OS, make sure you delete or overwrite the existing boot loader and you should be golden. jason PS - i usually find it easier to troubleshoot boot problems, especially with GRUB, if i have a dedicated /boot partition on the first boot device (i.e. /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda1). 100MB should be plenty. > I tried to upgrade to RH 8.
