Is there a setting on the linux box to change so that a record is created in the 2k dns server? Or will *nix write hostname records to 2k dns servers?

This one dogged me for a little bit until I found it. I wish it were the default in Red Hat to enable this but...

(This works on Red Hat... I don't know what distro you're running so YMMV)

Edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network and add a line that looks like:
DHCP_HOSTNAME="mybox.mydomain.com"

You can start restarting services, or reboot (probably easier if this is just a workstation).

That seems to work for me.
