support. Here are my parameters:

I'd like to avoid HP, if possible, as I'm not a fan of their nastiness
regarding third-party cartridge suppliers.

What suggestions do the folks here have?

I know that you may have your SuSE tuned to your liking and stuff, but I am going to suggest maybe a different distribution. I am using Xandros one one box and Mandrake on another -- both of which talk to my HP on a MS-Windows box flawlessly. And to configure the Samba connections was simple via the graphical menus.

We had a similar need, and opted for an HP PSC 750 -- this is a "printer,
scanner & copier" combo unit that Office Max had on sale for $150 (they
still do). Xandros and Mandrake had direct drivers for it, with a very
notable benefit: we can print color postscript output to this printer!
(I don't think that its native for this printer; I also have a LaserJet
6L on another MS-Win box, and the Samba driver for this also prints Linux
postscript output).

I have had HP, Lexmark and Epson over the years, and the quality and
longevity of the HP's far outweighs what the others offer. I recommend
an HP. Oh, and note: my wife just got a 3rd party cartridge for the PSC
and there are no problems. She says that it was 2/3 the price. I'll ask
her where she got it and repost here.
