I just ordered a couple of these Dell 1184 access points (actually, they are routers) because of some news that not only do they run Linux, but Dell is doing the right thing and shipping source code per their GPL obligations. The wireless chipset is a prism so there are no binary only modules to worry about.
The idea is to put together my own custom firmware enabling IPv6 and some routing protocols, put the prism into HostAP mode, and get a wireless mesh going in the Philadelphia area. I'm posting it here to see if I can plant the seed "back home".
