right now, i'm using the NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX (generic) and see a greyed out check box on the advanced tab for Enable Hardware 3D Acceleration.

I have to ask, did you install the nvidia linux driver fron http://www.nvidia.com ? That should help
And don't you have to do some manual changes to the XF86Config file?
