re: dmesg -- no errors show up. at the bottom is a portion of what i see.

re: iptables -- i ran all the commands you listed, but they did not help. also, when i reboot, and restart 'network' ... it uses iptables (see dmesg), even though i turned off iptables using chkconfig and service.

re: hardware issues, not sure where to start. oddly, although i 'lose' network service (in and out), the green light on the network card is on regardless of network status (it does not turn off when the network drops).

i also stopped all serviced i did not need on this box (cups, apm [thought that might help since this box is old old old], nfs, pcmcia, sendmail), but that has not helped either. i don't think it's the network cord because the green light on the network card still turns on ...

any more thoughts?
