It's probably just XFree86 with XDMCP enabled. Part of what supports this is "One of the great things is that we're able to run a poor man's thin client by using old computers we weren't using before because it couldn't handle Windows 2000."
He's probably got a stripped down Linux running on the older computers, with /etc/inittab modified. Take the line that looks like:
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
And change it to something more like:
x:5:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/X -query fasthost.localdomain.com
(I think that's right but you might want to double check the syntax before making the change)
Of course that won't work until you've gone through the necessary steps to get XDMCP running on "fasthost".
