Hi Jim,
Which Highpoint controller? I never had any problems with my HPT366 on my Abit BP6 motherboard running Mandrake 7.x to 9.1. What I might suggest, however, is to make sure your dns and /etc/hosts file are both setup correctly. X does everything over the network so if it has trouble finding the local address (yeah, I know it sounds weird, but...) things can go wonky.
