I am using a mozilla chat on a windoze system behind my linux firewall. Do I need to change something on the firewall?
Check to see what ports are open on the firewall, accessible from the outside world, especially SOCKS.
When I used DirecPC, I had to use a Windoze proxy server. I ran into this until I shut down pretty much everything originating in the outside world. Sorry I can't be more specific, but after playing with the firewall settings, it just went away.

P.S. You could also have someone port scan your IP from the outside world to see what's open.
