Where are driver vendors and app developers supposed to focus?

The driver vendors are supposed to focus on the Linux kernel, not on a specific distribution.

Applications will likely continue to be a sticky issue as long as the applications are closed source and only supported on specific distributions. Note that under the Open Source model most of these issues have been sorted out and popular applications run on most popular distributions (indeed, on most popular UNIX-ish OS's)

By purchasing closed source applications we're only perpetuating the conflict in paradigms.
