i try rebuilding my rpm database by using the follow command with no avail:

rpmdb --rebuilddb

am i running the incorrect command to update the urpmi database (most
likely) or is something else the matter???????

if urpmi is crapping out because the packages have changed in the update
folder then isn't urpmi smart enough to update its database itself ???????
or at least be smart enough to ask you if you want update the urpmi
database??????

Hi Brian, welcome to NC. :-) (Sorry about the football game this
past weekend. ;-)

urpmi from the command line needs to have it's package list updated
manually. If you run MandrakeUpdate, the graphical client, it will
update the update media package list automatically. To update urpmi's
package list, I generally use this command:

urpmi.update -a

That will update all package lists. If you only want to update
your update media package lists, substitute the name of the media
you want to update instead of "-a".

Note, btw, that the urpmi database is completely separate from the
rpm database, which as Sinner said, is the database of installed
packages. The urpmi database is everything that urpmi can install
(but isn't necessarily installed yet). So, none of the plain
rpm commands do anything with the urpmi database.
