Can't help on the Linux compatibility question but this is a pretty good camera review 
site that covers questions like the one you asked (picture taking speed).  I'm 
guessing you're going to have to pay a good buck for a fast camera.

There's a site called www.killboy.com where this guy takes moving motorcycle pictures 
each weekend and posts them.  I'd like to find out what he uses but haven't found the 
time to check the site carefully and ask if he doesn't already have the info. posted.
