howdy!

no, that is quite simple, and it worked -- which confuses me, because it seems when I used vi before that simply searching using /string did not carry highlighting through to a new vi session (after i quit and restart). maybe i've been living in the twilight zone for the past few years and have not noticed it ...

many thanks again!

Hello Doug,

Just type / to search for a new string and type in gibberish. It won't
find it and thus nothing will be highlighted. Am I over simplifying your
situation, or is the situation more complex?

Somehow I set 'vi' to highlight on a pattern of text, and I find it
rather annoying (well, it's helpful, but it's annoying that I a] do not

deleted anything that appeared to be a reference to it in my ~/.viminfo
file, but no dice!

Can anyone point me towards a nice, definitive VIM/VI online reference
and/or help me out? If help is chosen :) ... I'll pose the question,
what (online or not: pdf, ps, book) do you recommend for a vi 'quick
reference'?

Many thanks,
