We do some heavy duty stuff with JSP and Java and I would
offer two suggestions to keep your users and support folks
happier.
1 If you detect a down level JVM and you know that there
are functionality or usability issues with it, please
inform the user before they start.
2 Offer the ability to upgrade to the right version and
provide a gauge of how much time that it will take, as
some of the upgrades are huge.

Regards,
Jay

Jeremy is right. You don't need JSP's to do simple applets. If you want
some simple examples check out my java samples at:
http://www.skink.net/~davis/progs/java/
You can see an applet running and then you can click to the source for
my samples. If you get down to the swing section you can even see how
I put the magic string which tells the browser to autoinstall a jvm
on the client. Oh yeah, you do this by clicking view source in your
browser.
