(1) Find a good fast site. I used ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu and chuck.ucs.indiana.edu with good results. ibiblio gave me problems but I do use it to patch the machine when I'm on the UNC campus.
(2) I had a problem with the built in 3c90x NIC card in some old Dell Workstation 400s. SuSE/YaST did appear to discover and load the card properly but ifconfig showed errors so I ended up using a DLink and a IBM which worked great.
(3) On a laptop, SuSE 9 would not properly load the PCMCIA driver for a IBM 10/100 etherjet. SuSE 8.2 loaded and worked great on the same hardware. In my case the IBM uses a Xircom driver. I followed this procedure. The TRICK here is to get to the alternate install console (Alt-F9) and manually load the appropriate module:

After following the suggestion from mike, realized that in order to fix this problem, you will need to do a few more things in your situation as I was in the exact same situation.
1. DO NOT USE boot.iso cdrom, it does not contain the xircom_cb.o driver. 2. Create the bootimage, modules 1,2,3,4 floppy disks using dd or rawrite. 3. Boot from the boot disk, install modules that it asks for. 4. Insert modules disk 4 in to floppy and choose PCMCIA modules. 5. After it autodetects all the modules and goes back to the menu, hit ALT-F9 6. CD to /modules 7.Type modprobe xircom_cb.o and it should install and activate the Xicom card 8. Press ALT-F1 to go back to menu. 9. Start the installation and follow the normal install instructions from that point on, your network should be working.

Hi guys,
I'd like to try my hand at an ftp install of SuSE 9.0. (T3 pipe at the office!)
I have a dell 8100 with a Xircom RBEM56G-100 pcmcia card. I've acquired a
copy of 9.0 disk one, created module floppies, and worked my way up to selecting FTP as my "source media."
Alas, I am unable to initialize the nic. "Network device not detected. Install network module."
If you're using a PCMCIA nic, then you'll need to load the PCMCIA support
module first.
Selections from the (network) moduleds list fail to install. Does anyone know how I may insmod the specific module(s) I need?
Thanks, Jay
