Joseph and Tanner, thanks.

I've been looking at my postfix config and haven't spotted anything that is a giveaway for configuring it as a secondary MX. I'm assuming something special would have to be done because a stock Postfix setup typically doesn't accept email for users it knows nothing about.... With that in mind, where could I go for more specifics on how to implement this (just in case i miss something good in my google searches)

thanks
carl

Actually, if you guys don't mind me jumping into this thread. I'm curious that if you do have multiple MX records for email defined.... how exactly do you go about synchronizing them without the user having to pop/imap to multiple machines to retrieve their email from secondary backup servers?

The user never has any interaction with a secondary mx. The secondary
MX always transfers the mail (eventually) to the primary mx. Basically,
it's like if UPS wants to drop off a package at your house, but you're
not there. They will sometimes then drop it off at a neighbor's house
and ask them to take it to you. The neighbor is like the secondary
mx in that it serves as a temporary holding location for the
packge/message until it can be delivered to its final destination
(your house/your primary mail server).

Cheers,
Tanner
