I had been holding back, but I do know that many UN*X ( and UN*X-like ) OSs had limits like this on partition, filesystem, and even disk sizes. Solaris ( SunOS ) 4 and early 5 ( if I remember correctly ) had a maximum partition and filesystem size of 2 GB.
