Can someone explain to me the practical differences between mkfs and
mke2fs?

If you look in the same directory that mkfs is in you'll see a bunch of files like mkfs.ext2, mkfs.ext3, mkfs.msdos, mkfs.vfat, etc... It is my understanding that all mkfs does is calls the appropriate version of mkfs based on the -t filetype parameter. mke2fs should be exactly the same as mkfs.ext2 and mkfs.ext3. Looking on my system it looks like they are the same file (same size, although, they don't appear to be hard linked).

Cheers,
Tanner
