I loaded up Knoppix. It does not load the lvm-mod module by default (at least 
not my rev). 

After loading the module I was able to do a vgscan, which found volume1, 
vgchange -a y volume1, then I was able to mount /dev/volume1/root and 
everything seesm to be there.

so Knoppix is able to detect (at least manually) the system.
