I did it on a Pentium 60 with 16mb ram and two rtl8139 NICs.  You will have to 
be very conscious though of what you install- keep it to a minimum!  Don't 
install X or anything graphical, and don't run anything on it that will chew 
up much memory.  I ran apache and a mail server with spamassassin as the only 
two applications of significance resource-wise.

For the record, I did this with slackware.  I think it started with 7.0, and I 
made it to 8.2 before switching to a new machine and going with Mandrake.
