Boot from a Knoppix disc, and then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda
Let it run until it tells you no space left on device.
This will overwrite the whole disc with zeros, which should stop anyone
recovering it with software tools. If your enemy is willing to resort to
custom drive firmware, signal analyzers, and electron microscopy then you
may have a problem. Of course, if that sort of attention is being directed
your way then you have bigger concerns.
