This does NOT happen when I run a different window manager / desktop.
I used icewm a while back, and I never saw delays then.  Only under
KDE.

Also, another data point.  While "vi" does delay, "make" does not.
"more" and "less" do not.

This makes me suspect maybe something in the /tmp directory.  I know
that KDE uses some socket files in /tmp.  Would these cause some sort
of delay/timeout?
