Ooh ooh ooh! I've seen this before! And I have no idea how to fix it. But I have definitely seen the root user have problems like what you are describing. In fact, the way I've seen it, is (for example) konsole will launch and then immediately close. At the time, I and some associates had theorized (based on circumstantial evidence) that logging into a Gnome environment would somehow scramble KDE and cause this. Can anyone expand on that?

I can SSH in, the box only seems to do this when
logged in as root.  When logged in as any other user

can you crtl-alt-F2 to get a console screen and log
