smtp-auth isn't absolutely necessary if they can relay thru the service 
provider's smtp server, although i like to be able to store their sent 
items.  pop-leave-mail-on-server would probably work, although i have a 
gut feeling that it would result in more problems than a 100% imap 
solution.  plus it wouldn't provide access to folders other than the 
inbox.  thanks for the feedback -
