Brian, If i recall correctly, "passing" a SMART test only means that catastrophic failure is not expected within the next 24 hours.
It looks like you haven't used the SMART tests. Try both of these: smartctl -t short /dev/hda The results will show up in the output below. Then try: smartctl -t long /dev/hda After a while, those results will also show up in the output below. I recently worked with a drive that passed all the SMART tests but consistently was producing errors, which were demonstrated in the above mentioned tests.
