This topic was addressed on the list a few months ago, talking about a transparent drop-in linux-based firewall.. It wasn't something that I was concerned with at the time so I don't remember a great deal about it, but you might want to check the TriLUG archive.

Yep.  This can be done.  Someone where I work has a linux box set up as
a bridge and is running firewall rules on it to protect a Beowolf
cluster.  The system is normally invisible to the network.
