Cyrus can use PAM as the authentication piece, but that wasn't the
case a few years ago.  Thus the information is a little outdated.  I
refer you to the authoritative site: http://asg.web.cmu.edu/cyrus/ . 
The wiki linked there will probably be the most useful.
