Yes, use vpnc (http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~massar/vpnc/).  For some reason, 
this
client still allows the local lan (I haven't even tried to understand why).  The
only disadvantage is that keyringing doesn't work, so you'll get timed out 
after 8
hours, no matter how the VPN concentrator is configured.  It's a known bug, and 
the
vpnc developers are working on it.

Other than that, vpnc is a wonderful alternative.
