yes it was checked
for reference, here are my current 'advanced account settings':
checked 'show only subscribed folders' unchecked 'Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages'
checked 'Use Idle command if the server supports it'
--
5 'max number of connections to cache'
--
< default 'personal namespaces', 'public', and 'other uses' settings>
checked 'Allow server to override these name spaces'

Just out of curiosity, did you have the checkbox selected that lets the server override those settings? I thought that it should inform the mail client about that, but perhaps that's just for the namespaces.
Glad you got it working.

The default IMAP advanced account setting named 'server supports folders contain sub-folders and messages' must be turned off ( till trilug imap is upgraded).
This fixed my problems.
Thanks all. b

Yes that is the way I thought it worked ( at least used to work).
Since I've upgraded to win32 thunderbird ( from an old mozilla version) it isn't working for me. I'm using the default IMAP settings.
Currently ( at least for me), 1. folders can't contain folders, and 2. folders can't be deleted.
Can anybody verify this?

Brett,
At the moment, you can't have folders that contain both other folders and messages. You can have folders that contain folders only and you can have folders that contain messages, but not both. However, as soon as we can figure out our problems moving ldap over to the new server, we will be switching to Cyrus IMAP which will remove this limitation.
As far as deleting old folders, you should just be able to right click the folder in the left side column in Thunderbird and tell it to delete. It will confirm and then should delete.
Note, btw, that if you want a folder to contain other folders, the best way right now is to create the folder, then immediately create other folders in it before any messages go in it.

How can I delete old folders? Thunderbird gives me an error when I try to delete it:
The current command did not succeed. The mail serer responded:
RENAME failed: can't create mailbox node
/var/spool/imap/brettb/Trash: file exists
Thanks.
