I nearly hyperventilated at the Apple Store last week playing a 30" display connected to a dual G5 mac.

A little larger than you asked for, but Dell has a very higly-rated 2001FP 20.1" and it frequently goes on sale for near $600. IIRC, it was one of the first 20" LCD fast enough for gaming to hit the lower price ranges. We just got two for $600/ea when we bought some new machines. Not cheap, but not expensive, either. To my eyes, it looks great. If you're not in a big hurry, watch delloutlet.com for a deal.
(BTW, it goes up to 1600x1200).
