I don't know if there's any special consideration for wide screens as
opposed to not...  I don't see why there would be.  But I do know that
you can set a lower visible resolution than the actual framebuffer.
This is what happens whenever Half-Life 2 crashes under Cedega, and yes,
it moves around when your mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen.
