You weren't trying to 'cat' the wav file were you?

No, I was using a MATLAB function called sound(x,fs), where x is the data values (voltages) and fs is the sampling frequency for the voltages. I tried what Mr. Anderson suggested, but it didn't seem to matter what level I set the PCM or the output level to. I even tried multiplying the voltages by 0.1 and interestingly, that didn't even reduce the volume of the output signal. It must be a problem with how MATLAB is trying to use the device. I don't have a lot of time right now to go into all its private .m scripts to see what it is doing, but I think this is the problem. Thanks for all the help folks!
