I use the latest Qemu and it has a kernel module that allows ring 3 code to run native on the processor. Only ring 0 code is emulated. It runs quite nicely using win2k on my AMD 2800. I also use it for Quicken, since I use quicken billpay, its the only windows app that I couldn't do without. Since I installed win2k under QEMU I don't have to dual boot my system to use quicken. I don't know about XP home under QEMU though.

http://www.microsoft.com/mac was busted last time I tried it... heh,
appears to be back today... *shrugs*

If I can, I'll convince her kids to use OOo. Firefox has flash, so
they'll be happy there... as for quickbooks... maybe she is willing to
learn gnucash?? she's highly UNsavvy though, so prospects for that
aren't good.

I've almost convinced her to try linux, but need to give her a way to
get to Microsoft Office and Quickbooks, figured a free VM is better
than paying for crossover or something.

How'd the networking and how's QEMU on allowing the VM to access the
local /home of the host OS?

Thanks,
